What's up with Cupping?

Bodywork by Victoria specializes in Sports Performance & Recovery, Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation, Pain Management, and Muscle Sculpting.

Massages at Bodywork by Victoria is not your run of the mill massage like those you get at massage chains, where you feel good for a few hours after the massage, and then the pain comes back.  Victoria uses techniques that are not usually available at day spa chains, and this is what sets Bodywork by Victoria apart from those chains.  Victoria uses Eastern and Western massage techniques to bring about change in the muscle quickly and effectively which results in increased range of motion, reduction in tension and pain.  Victoria also seeks out the source of your pain rather than just treating the area that hurts.

Cupping Therapy is a thousands of years old Eastern massage technique Victoria uses to loosen tight muscles, release adhesions and breakup scar tissue. Cupping Therapy creates a vacuum, negative pressure, on the skin to dispel stagnant blood and lymph, improving Qi (life force / energy) flow in the body.  The vacuum created also pulls fresh, nutrient-rich and oxygenated blood into the area that is drawn up into the cup which is what heals the body.  Tight muscles, muscle adhesions and scar tissue all lack proper blood flow that keeps the muscles working properly.  Tissues become ischemic when there is restricted blood flow and results in tissue dysfunction, which we feel as pain.

Many have seen the circular “bruising” that is left from Cupping Therapy and think that Cupping Therapy is a painful treatment.  This could not be further from the truth.  Cupping Therapy is a gentle suction that can be adjusted to each person’s tolerance.  The cupping marks are a diagnostic tool for the Cupping Practitioner.  The darker the marks, the more cellular waste or stagnation there is in the area.  Stagnation is a cause of the pain you feel, especially after an injury or surgery.  With each successive cupping session, the marks lighten, which means the stagnation and cellular waste in the body are being dispelled. Having less stagnation and cellular waste in your body means your body is functioning better and you’ll experience less pain.  How long do the marks last?  It all depends on how well your body’s lymphatic system processes the cellular waste that is brought to the surface.  Some have had marks disappear just after 3 to 5 days, and others have had marks take up to 10 days to disappear.

Cupping Therapy is a superior massage technique for pain relief, chronic conditions, repetitive strains, inflammation, toxicity, respiratory problems and many other issues – stiff neck, low back pain, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome, rotator cuff injuries and many more.

Other benefits of Cupping Therapy:

  • detoxifies the body from illness and medications/drugs
  • reduces the effects/ duration of a common cold
  • increases metabolism
  • improves the look and feel of cellulite

Ladies, those areas – back of the thighs/ “saddlebags”, back fat around the bra-line, upper arm flab, that seem to never go away no matter how much exercise or dieting you do, can be reduced with Cupping Therapy and massage.

Another advanced technique Victoria utilizes is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), you may know this as Graston technique, in which specially designed stainless steel tools are used to breakdown scar tissue and adhesions, then realign the muscle fibers.

The body lays down scar tissue in an attempt to heal the area when you sustain an injury or experience repetitive stress.  This fibrous web of tissue restricts blood flow and disrupts communication between muscle and brain, causing the muscle to shorten and tighten. By using these specialized handheld tools, the disorganized scar tissue is broken down so that the new tissue can be laid down in the proper alignment to the existing muscle tissue fibers to restore mobility and strength, and making the area less prone to injury.

 Benefits of IASTM:

  • Decreases overall time of treatment
  • Allows faster rehabilitation/recovery
  • Reduces need for anti-inflammatory medication
  • Resolves chronic conditions thought to be permanent
  • Clients can continue to engage in everyday activities
